Bethany, Tom R, Brad, Lindy Lou, and everyone else who participated.  Thanks for being apart of this, and I hope it helped form some convictions for long term health.

Kevin!  Great to hear from you and hope to see you soon brother!

The previous picture was of the 30 Years War:

The Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) was one of the most destructive conflicts in European history. The war was fought primarily (though not exclusively) in Germany and at various points involved most of the countries of Europe. Naval warfare also reached overseas and shaped the colonial formation of future nations.

The origins of the conflict and goals of the participants were complex and no one cause can accurately be described as the main reason for the fighting. Initially the war was fought largely as a religious conflict between Protestants and Catholics in the Holy Roman Empire, although disputes over the internal politics and balance of power within the Empire played a significant part. Gradually the war developed into a more general conflict involving most of the European powers. In this general phase the war became more a continuation of the Bourbon-Habsburg rivalry for European political pre-eminence, and in turn led to further warfare between France and the Habsburg powers, and less specifically about religion.

A major impact of the Thirty Years' War was the extensive destruction of entire regions, denuded by the foraging armies. Episodes of famine and disease significantly decreased the populace of the German states and the Low Countries and Italy, while bankrupting most of the combatant powers. While the regiments within each army were not strictly mercenary in that they were not guns for hire that changed sides from battle to battle, the individual soldiers that made up the regiments for the most part probably were. The problem of discipline was made more difficult still by the ad hoc nature of 17th century military financing. Armies were expected to be largely self-funding from loot taken or tribute extorted from the settlements where they operated. This encouraged a form of lawlessness that imposed often severe hardship on inhabitants of the occupied territory. Some of the quarrels that provoked the war went unresolved for a much longer time. The Thirty Years' War was ended with the Treaty of Münster, a part of the wider Peace of Westphalia.

Thus concludes today's history lesson.

Day 30 August 11, 2009

E-mail

IT'S HERE!!!  The final day.  Congrats to everyone who changed/learned/tried something new during the past month.  I will admit it was tough at times, but really rewarding.  I had started this challenge a few days before I posted the initial challenge, so I had Ice Cream yesterday with my kids.  (Still made it over 30 days though) Tasty, but I must warn you it wrecked my gut!!  Be easy and good to yourselves while "cheating"

Thanks to all who participated, and please check back and give us updates on how things are going...

PS If you can tell me what this picture is I will be really impressed.

Day 26 August 7, 2009

4 days and counting.  I enjoyed reading what you guys have learned.  Lindy I'm with you on realizing I can eat sensibly even when stressed or going through something difficult.  I've been inspired and learned something from each of you.

Jon Gilson over at AgainFaster.com hit another home run with this article.

 Cult

By Jon Gilson

This can’t be a cult; the connotations are all wrong. "Cult" would imply that something foolish or devious is occurring, something motivated by greed or vanity, something to do with stars or demigods, the cosmos or the second coming.

The only motivation here is excellence. Caring too much. Pushing the boundaries. All that stuff you say during a job interview and nobody believes you.

From outside the looking glass, I can see the disbelief. I can believe the disbelief. Thousands of people, swearing up and down this is the best thing since solar power, lawn irrigation, and supermarkets, bundled into a free-if-you-want-it package and available daily, changing lives every time. It sounds like a teenager’s drunken promise, whispered sweetly and mired in mal-intent.

It sounds like a teenager’s drunken promise, whispered sweetly and mired in mal-intent.

Any rational human being would assume that there’s a plot, a cabal at the top, aiming to steal and maim, to prosper at another’s expense.

There’s not. I know, because I’ve sat at the table. I’ve had the conversations, reflecting on the past and predicting the future, wondering at the sheer speed of the rocket ship, the linear progression turning geometric. The discourse isn’t yachts and summer homes; it’s progress.

The driver of this mission is physical superiority; a battle-ready state, general physical fitness spurred by a contrarian philosophy and a general distain for bullshit.

We want our Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen to pummel our Nation’s enemies. We want our sons and daughters to reject a sedentary lifestyle. We want our parents out of nursing homes and into society.

We do not want a cult, togas and Nikes ready for the apocalypse, and we couldn’t have one anyway. CrossFitters are too numerous to track, let alone control. They’re recklessly dispersed in America and the Middle East, Peru and Finland, Prague and Canada, arrayed under a thousand coaches, many of whom would just as soon eat horseflesh as agree with each other.

The only motivation here is the higher calling, the moral stance, and the knowledge that kind of good is not good enough, that health and wellbeing are sacrosanct, that the truth is inviolable, that fitness is everything.

Decry the organization, but know that your arguments are false. This is no siren song, no massive conspiracy to suck dollars from the pockets of the credulous. This is a revolution, righteous, transparent, and effective. It is a philosophy couched in generosity and executed unfailingly.  It is a way of life, and it will continue, with or without you.

Day 25 August 6, 2009

5 days left.  That's right, 5 days.  At this point I want to remind us all that the goal of this is NOT weight loss.  The goal IS better health in a sustainable way.  Now I'm not a complete idiot, the weight loss and added strength is wonderful, just not the ultimate goal. Remember those who serve.

Today I want you ALL to post something you've learned recently.  It can be nutrition related, or it can be much more fun and interesting than that.  Anything you've learned, be it about your job, about our President who likes to say the police acted "stupidly" while admitting he doesn't know any of the facts. (sorry still a bit upset about that one...) It could be something your kids, spouse, or friend taught you.  ANYTHING.

Oh, and if you read this post, then you are obligated to participate...

Here's an interesting read.  Save yourselves some money. And save me some to for crimney's sake!

Day 23 August 4, 2009

E-mail

A friend of mine asked me a good question last night.  She asked, "so what do you think will be the food you first cheat with when the challenge is over?"  I had to think for a minute of what that would be.  I'm really not missing much right now.  Like I said earlier, a diet dr. pepper every now and then would be a treat, or some ice cream with the kids.  So I spent a minute thinking and said, "it'll probably be on August 14 (my son Noah's 8th birthday)"  As for what I'm not sure.  I take my boys to breakfast on their birthday, and we order whatever they want.  With Noah I'm guessing donuts or cinnamon rolls will be involved.

Is there something you are looking forward to big time when this is over?  If so what is it, and when will you consume it?

Paleo Brands is hosting a seminar.  CHECK IT OUT HERE PS  Click on the picture to see the whole thing.  Pretty witty I thought.

Day 22 August 3, 2009

E-mail

It's already been 22 days guys.  I'm stoked with the way this has gone for me personally.  I am thinking I will be abiding by this 90-95% of the time.  The changes for me with cutting dairy and artificial sweeteners have been so apparent I'm sold.  I will however enjoy diet drinks occasionally (in movies perhaps...) and some ice cream with my kids (and wife) on special occasions.  What do you guys think you will do.  Those of you who are pretending you don't exist anymore and have fizzled off...what did you go back to, and what do you think attributed to stop the challenge?

Bethany and others who have stayed the course thus far, what is different now from 22 days ago?

Check this out!  The Surprising Ingredient Causing Weight Gain

It's an F-22 fighter jet.  I googled 22 since we are on day 22 and this came up...

Day 21 August 2, 2009

E-mail

Alright folks, 9 days and counting.  I want everyone to start thinking how they are realistically going to keep the momentum gained during this 30 day deal.  Are you going to stay strict during the week and loosen up on the weekends, or save the loosening only for special occasions?  Those are some examples, share with us your ideas.

Jason, over at CrossFitOKC put up a good link to a video.  Check it out HERE.
